The RetroExternalModem is an open hardware project that turns a Raspberry Pi 3
into an external modem connected via Wi-Fi, emulating dial-up ISP connections and BBS —
complete with authentic dial-up sounds!
A 3D-printed enclosure mimics the look of the classic Sportster modem from the 90s,
with status LEDs and an RS-232 serial connector that plugs straight into your vintage computer.
Dial 2242525 for internet access via PPP, or use ATDT
to connect to any BBS by hostname. Contributor Luiz Pacheco’s Micronet BBS is at
ATDT3372234.
The 3D Sportster enclosure was designed by our contributor Luiz Pacheco, available for
standard PLA printing on Thingiverse.
